Morning Pages
Morning Pages are a genius way to clear mental clutter before your day kicks off.
The idea is simple: grab a pen and write three pages by hand as soon as you wake up.
No stress. No edits. No worrying about how it looks or sounds.
This isn’t about writing something pretty—it’s just a brain dump of whatever’s rattling around in your head, from “I slept like garbage” to deeper stuff you didn’t even know was bothering you.
There’s something powerful about handwriting. When you write by hand, you’re not just putting words on paper—you’re engaging parts of your brain that help with deeper thinking, memory, and emotional processing. It forces you to slow down, giving you the space to really process what’s going on.
It’s like hitting the reset button for your brain, clearing out all the noise so you can actually focus. Just spill out whatever comes up, no filtering, no editing. And if you’re stuck, do what I do: write “I don’t know what to write” on repeat until something clicks. It’s not fancy, but it works.
Over time, this practice gets easier, and you start connecting more with your thoughts and feelings. Some days, I’m surprised when I’m already at the end of my pages, and other times, I end up writing a fourth page because there’s just more I need to clear out.
Ultimately, it’s up to you what you write and how you write it. But beware: don’t read them back. This is not a journal to cherish and read back to remember your youthful shenanigans. This is a brain dump and often will result in negativity. This is a good thing. But be prepared. Get that garbage out and start your day with a clean slate.
Here are three ways you can write your Morning Pages
Handwritten
(on paper)
Handwriting on paper averages about 250 words per page.
Take two to three sheets of regular-sized paper and write until you get to the end of the third page. Bonus points for writing double-sided.
I used to use hardcover notebooks because I’m that much of a nerd. 😅
Handwritten
(on a tablet with a stylus)
Average words per page depends on the size of your tablet.
Use an app on your tablet with a lined note. Total pages depends on your tablet size.
I write four pages with notability (only available on iOS) on my iPad. The free version has limited editing.
Typewritten
(Word/Google doc or online app)
Arial, 11 or 12 point, single-spaced, averages about 750 words per page.
Any digital document will do, but if you prefer a bit of gamification, try an online writing tool.
I used 750 words. There’s a free trial, but after that, it’s a small monthly subscription.
